January 2011 Developmental Update

Winston is nearly 7 months old now, about 19 pounds and 23 inches long. He has gone from being the littlest baby to the biggest infant in his cohort. They now call him "gordita" (little fat one is the literal translation) at day care. They assure me it is a term of endearment!

He talks a blue streak...babble mostly, but Dave delights in hearing Winston say "dadadada" every morning. The books say that he is too young to connect words with people and things, but he clearly picks up on the fact that Dave beams with delight every time Winston say's "dada."

Winston is now an expert eater - rice cereal mixed with banana is clearly the favorite. In 2 weeks, he went from gagging at the sight of the spoon to grunting impatiently between spoonfuls. He is sitting up un-assisted now...he still topples over every now and then which is funny as long as he is on a soft surface. He is starting to scoot - right now he moves backwards when he is trying to move forward, but he'll get the hang of it shortly. Dave and I have been putting off baby-proofing the house but the time is now. He will be exploring every item and pulling himself up before we know it.

Two little white nubs emerged in Winston's mouth a week or so ago. He has been chewing on his hands quite a bit, but he didn't have any of the terribly fussiness I see in some of the other babies at daycare. I guess teething can be accompanied with fever and prolonged crankiness. Let's hope Win avoids THAT phase.

The child loves little girls. He giggles and belly laughs at the sight of Lili, and when she gives him even cursory attention, he screeches in delight. I saw the same behavior with a total stranger - a two year old at a local sandwich place. The little girl (Victoria) was enamored with Winston, and he with her. Between the two of them, the store was filled with enough giggles to delight even the solemn man behind the counter.
